Chiang Khong – a Thai border town

Today was the day I head out to catch the slowboat to Luang Prabang, Laos. The minivan picked me up in the morning and was already loaded with a group of travelers. Our first stop was at the White Temple in Chiang Rai.

Wat Rong Khun is a contemporary unconventional Buddhist temple designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat. Construction began in 1996 and is expected to be completed 60 – 90 years after the death of the artist and designer.

While on the 5 hr minivan ride to Chiang Khong, I chatted with a German traveler Tatjana. Back hose she was a designer and taking a 3 month travel to see SE Asia and make some life decisions, which is a common theme here I believe. On the bus were Canadians, Germans, Englishmen as well as a Swiss.

We arrived at our destination and were all handed room keys and fed a very basis meal. It was just before sunset so Tatjana and I walked into the village to have a look around. As usual, the temple was incredible.

Since we all had a early morning to the border tomorrow, I made sure to turn in really early. 10am lights out for me.
